Why Manchester Homes Are Well-Suited to Heat Pumps
A common misconception is that heat pumps need hot, sunny weather. They don't. Modern air source heat pumps extract heat from air as cold as −15°C — Manchester's average winter temperatures (typically 3–7°C) are well within the operating range of every unit we install.
Most Greater Manchester housing stock is ideal for heat pumps:

The £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant (£9,000 Off the Gas Grid)
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides a £7,500 government grant toward air source heat pump installation. Greentech is an MCS-certified installer, which means we handle the BUS application on your behalf — you simply pay the reduced cost.
From July 2026 to March 2027, homes off the gas grid replacing oil or LPG heating can get £9,000 — relevant for parts of Saddleworth, rural Wigan and the Pennine fringes.

Manchester homeowners replacing an ageing gas boiler are our most common BUS applicants. The grant brings a typical 8–10kW ASHP installation from around £9,500 down to approximately £2,000–£4,500 depending on property size.
On a low income? Manchester City Council's Warm Homes Manchester scheme can fully fund a heat pump for eligible households.
Air Source Heat Pump Installation Cost in Manchester
Installed costs in Greater Manchester depend on property size, your existing heating distribution (radiators vs underfloor heating), and whether insulation upgrades are needed. Typical ranges after the £7,500 BUS grant:
| Property Type | System Size | Installed Cost (after grant) |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3 bed mid-terrace | 6–8 kW | £1,500 – £3,000 |
| 3–4 bed semi-detached | 8–10 kW | £2,000 – £4,000 |
| 4–5 bed detached | 10–14 kW | £3,000 – £5,500 |
| Large detached / bungalow | 12–16 kW | £4,000 – £6,500 |
Prices include supply, installation, commissioning, MCS certification, and BUS grant processing. Radiator upgrades (where needed) are quoted separately.
Running costs depend on your tariff and the system's efficiency (SCOP). On a heat pump tariff such as Octopus Cosy, a well-designed system is typically cheaper to run than an old gas boiler — your survey includes a running-cost estimate for your home. Brands We Install in Manchester
We stock and install the leading heat pump brands at our Manchester depot, meaning shorter lead times than most regional installers:
| Brand | Key Model | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Vaillant | aroTHERM Plus 7–12kW | Most UK homes, quiet operation |
| Mitsubishi Electric | Ecodan 8–11kW | High-efficiency, app control |
| Daikin | Altherma 3 H HT | Older homes with high-temp radiators |
| Samsung | EHS Mono HT Quiet | Compact outdoor unit, tight plots |
| LG | Therma V R32 HT | Large homes, low noise |
We recommend the right brand for your specific property — not the brand with the highest installer margin.
Radiator Compatibility in Manchester Homes
The most common question from Manchester homeowners: "do I need new radiators?" The honest answer: sometimes, but less often than you've been told.
Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures (35–55°C) compared to gas boilers (65–75°C). Whether your existing radiators can distribute heat effectively depends on:
Our Manchester survey calculates your home's heat loss room by room. If radiator upgrades are needed, we quote them as a fixed-price addition — typically £150–£400 per radiator. Most 2010+ homes in Manchester require no radiator changes at all. Read our full radiator compatibility guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my Manchester home suitable for a heat pump?
Most detached, semi-detached and many terraced homes in Manchester are suitable. Key requirements: outdoor space for the unit (enough space around the unit for airflow), adequate insulation, and a compatible heating distribution system. Our free survey will confirm suitability within 2 hours.
How long does air source heat pump installation take in Manchester?
For a standard residential installation in Greater Manchester, allow 1–2 days. This includes removal of the old boiler (if applicable), fitting the outdoor unit, installing the indoor components, connecting to your existing radiators or underfloor heating, and commissioning.
Will a heat pump work on my Manchester Victorian terrace?
Victorian terraces require more careful assessment. If you have cavity wall insulation and loft insulation to modern standards, a well-sized heat pump can work effectively. We've installed in many Manchester Victorian terraces — the key is proper heat loss calculation, not assumptions.
What happens to my gas connection?
Your gas connection can be capped and decommissioned, or left in place if you want the option to revert. Most Manchester homeowners choosing heat pumps cap the gas as a cost saving (standing charge removal). We coordinate with Cadent Gas if decommissioning is required.
How noisy is an air source heat pump?
Modern units typically run at around 45–55 dB at one metre — similar to a quiet dishwasher. Since 29 May 2025 the old rule requiring units to be at least 1 metre from a boundary no longer applies in England: under permitted development you can now install up to two units of up to 1.5 m³ each, provided the installation passes the MCS noise assessment. Extra restrictions still apply to listed buildings and some conservation-area frontages. Our Manchester survey includes the noise assessment and a unit positioning plan.
Can I get a heat pump if I have solar panels?
Yes — and it's one of the most effective combinations. Running a heat pump on surplus solar energy (via a smart controller like MyEnergi Eddi) can effectively make your heating free during the summer months. Greentech installs both solar and heat pumps — we can quote a combined system.
Do I need bigger radiators for a heat pump?
Sometimes. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures (35–55°C) than gas boilers, so some rooms may need a larger radiator. Our room-by-room heat loss survey shows exactly which ones — typically £150–£400 per radiator, and many post-2010 homes need none. See our radiator guide.
What are the downsides of a heat pump in a Manchester home?
Higher upfront cost than a like-for-like boiler (much reduced by the BUS grant), the need for outdoor space for the unit, and possible radiator or insulation upgrades in older terraces. Running costs also depend on getting the design and your tariff right — which is why we size every system from a full heat loss calculation.
